Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, often referred to by locals as Joburg's "best-kept secret", is situated to the south of Johannesburg city centre and stretches over 680 ha of open veld landscape and koppies. The reseve is fenced and supervised by horse patrols and a guard at the Frandaph gate entrance.
It is home to a variety of wildlife such as duiker, blesbok, porcupines, otter and zebra, and is also an important archaeological area with many Iron Age sites. About 600 indigenous plant species can be found in the reserve, and 150 bird types.
There are several hiking trails, some of which are nine kilometres long. Guided trails are also available but have to be booked in advance. The best place to enter the reserve for walking is at the northern entrance from Frandaph Road, Mondeor. The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association organises Spring and Autumn days twice a year, which offer three-hour walks and a social braai.
Other artefacts that are of interest are the remnants of the BaTswana Village and its original stone walls, as well as the remains of a house built by one of the voortrekkers during the 1800s.
